Flying Kites exists to lead change in New Zealand. Their mahi is driven by a passionate belief in support tailored to the person, not the system.
“People don’t fit in boxes, so neither should support services.”
They work alongside people with disabilities and their whānau to find personalised support, and plan for big life transitions like moving out, starting new relationships, or leaving residential services. Navigating the disability system can be difficult, but it shouldn’t have to be.
A big part of their mahi is their Advisory Team, lived-experience experts who give feedback on their services and help shape everything from resources and workshops to organisational direction. Spectrum Foundation’s funding supported the establishment of this rōpū, something we are very proud to have been a part of.
Flying Kites believes that any services designed to provide disability support need to be guided by those who have lived experience of disability. They bring unique perspectives and represent the diversity within Aotearoa’s disabled communities, enabling the development of programmes and services that truly serve the disabled community.
