The National Disabled Students’ Association (NDSA) was established in 2021 to advocate for disabled ākonga across Aotearoa and strengthen their connections, leadership and collective voice within tertiary education.
Through events, campaigns and training opportunities, NDSA helps disabled students develop their advocacy skills and work towards more accessible and inclusive learning environments.
Spectrum Foundation funding supported the 2026 Learner Training Hui, a three-day gathering attended by more than 30 disabled students and speakers from universities, polytechnics and vocational education providers across Aotearoa.
The hui strengthened relationships and increased students’ confidence to advocate for change within their institutions and communities. Attendees reported feeling better equipped to represent other disabled students, engage with decision-makers and establish local disabled student networks.
Following the event, NDSA also saw increased participation in its national member forums. By bringing disabled students together and supporting them to lead change, NDSA is helping build a stronger disability movement across tertiary education.
